Keep an eye your site

8 April, 2010 (15:30) | Tips | By: x10staff

This may seem like a stupid tip to most of you, and that is all good and as it should be.

But there are probably some that need to hear this. You should at least once a week take a look at your site, to see that it is functioning properly and that everything is ok.

A lot of you have dynamic sites like a blog or a forum, and if you have that you probably already do visit your site regularly. But for the ones with a static page, or a page that rarely needs to be updated, a reminder could be in place.

Might even be a good idea to take the time and think about if there’s anything that could be better, if there is any information that should be added.

Sometimes you do tend to get “blind” about the site when you are working on your site, but checking in on it a few days later may give you a new idea about how to present your information in a way that better draws the viewers attention to what your site is about.

Create a local backup of your data

1 April, 2010 (18:52) | Tips | By: x10staff

Backing up your files and data regularly is highly recommended, especially if you often change the files. For systems that rely on mySQL for content, such as blogs and forums for instance the files usually don’t change much and doesn’t need to be backed up regularly. You only need to take a backup of them after you made a change to the code.

If you haven’t made any customizations to the code you probably don’t even need to back the files, as you can always get them from the respective projects pages. Just need to know what version your database matches in that case.

Backups should be stored locally on your own computer, or at least somewhere other then in your x10Hosting account. If something goes wrong, chances are your backups disappears as well if you keep them in your account only.
